Our Philosophy

Classroom or

homeschool?

We are not for or against either classroom learning or homeschool. Some children thrive in a classroom, and some thrive in a homeschool. We believe in suiting the education style and setting to the child - when possible, and within reason!

Religious or

secular?

We think that religious ideas and references have a place in a Western curriculum, as Christian thought has been a tremendous force in shaping literature, education and science in the west. So, Christian and religious content should be included and acknowledged, even if learners are not themselves Christian.

It is important to talk about issues of context and worldview when using texts from bygone times (Christian or not). Any racist or outdated ideas should only be presented as a springboard for constructive conversation.

Learning or

playing?

Disciplined effort balanced with plenty of free time, play and structure-free exploration would make for a perfectly balanced education. Everything is a learning experience, including some ‘boring’ disciplined rote learning.

We see education as akin to eating well - too much sugar, and you lose interest. Too much healthy salt-free stuff, and you start to feel heavy! Balance is key. Eat your vegetables, then have a treat!
